Why I Keep Coming Back to Scarlet Springs Farm in Loudoun County

Because something true always happens here

I keep trying to figure out what makes Scarlet Springs Farm different.

I've been there a handful of times now. Full sessions, half sessions, minis, a couple of all-hands-on-deck-collaborative styled shoots because this place deserved to be seen properly.

I've photographed the family that actually owns and cares for the animals and the land.

I know where the light falls in late summer. I know how the hills look when fall starts creeping in. I know which spots make people stop mid-sentence and just breathe for a second.

And I still can't fully explain what makes it work the way it does.

The Place Itself

Scarlet Springs is a small agrotourism style farm in Waterford, Virginia- which is already the kind of sentence that sounds like I made it up.

Rolling hills. Open pasture. The kind of landscape that doesn't look real until you're standing in the middle of it, wondering how you live 40 minutes from here and have never been.

They host weddings and gatherings and luxury picnics. They collaborate on Vendor-led workshops like: wreath making and seasonal crafts, the kind of Saturday afternoon you actually want to go to. They celebrate all-year milestones with holiday events where you can bring your kids to meet Santa on the farm, or sit down to a proper Mother's Day tea in the middle of a working pasture.

And the cream of the crop attraction:  The Highland Cow Experiences where you can feed, brush, love on, interact with, and just be close to the cows while a photographer like me gets to document whatever happens in that time... just for you.

And late afternoon in summer and fall, when the light comes across that open land and lights up the entire pasture with a warm, unhurried glow - like it's as reluctant to leave as everyone else - there is very little room for disappointment.

Those Highland Cows, Though

Okay, serious talk now.  The Coos as the Scottish naturally say.

There is a moment that happens at Scarlet Springs that I have never been able to predict or recreate, and I've stopped trying to, but I've seen it many times now. It happens somewhere between the this barn and the next, mixed in with all that beautiful golden hour light, a highland cow turns and looks at your kid, and your kid looks back, and whatever was left of the performance stage just... leaves.

Nobody is thinking about where to put their hands. Nobody is wondering if they're smiling right. Nobody is thinking about anything except that enormous, gentle animal standing three feet away from them.

That's the moment I'm there for.  I can't quite put my finger on how it happens, and honestly - its probably just palpable instinct at this point.  But I've found myself just waiting and watching for it now.

Everyone loves the cows. I have not yet met a family who didn't. Even the little ones who are a bit timid of loud barking dogs may take a moment to warm, but will always settle right in in the presence of these gentle giants.  Even the adults who told me they aren't really photo-people have their walls softened by these gorgeous animals and just really love being in the moment and having it all captured for them to re-live over and over again.

What a Session Here Actually Looks Like

In one of my styled shoots here I photographed a surprise proposal during a luxury picnic, a couple getting engagement portraits in the pasture, and then time with the cows. Three completely different experiences in the same afternoon. The location held all of it without blinking.

We've had family sessions on the grounds before their time with the cows.

I've done mini sessions with the cows and then s'mores back at the fire pit for a little cow-experience dessert.

Some of my best work came out of the sessions at Scarlet Springs Farm, And I say that as someone who is almost never satisfied with her own work (tortured artist, and all). There's always something about the combination of that specific light and that specific land and people who had finally stopped performing.

I don't think there is a formula to recreate it, and I've lamented and stopped trying to.  This is simply the space to introduce curious human to sweet beast and let the rest take its course.

When To Come

Late afternoon. Summer or fall. That's my answer every time someone asks.

The light in summer comes across those hills in a way that makes everything look like it was lit by someone who knew exactly what they were doing.

Fall adds color to the hills and a kind of stillness to the air that photographs in a way I can't manufacture anywhere else.

The summer will give you warm, glowy, and cozy.

The Fall will give you bold colorful, light contrast, and maybe a bit of a breeze if you're lucky.

Is This the Right Location for Your Family?

Scarlet Springs is a good fit if your family wants something that feels expansive and alive: open land, real animals, golden light, space to actually move and breathe and stop thinking about the camera for a minute.

It's also a good fit if you have kids who need something to do. A child who is done with the session before it starts will never want to leave when your time with the cows eventually comes to an end. I have seen this happen. It is one of my favorite things to witness.

It's a good fit if you want images that look like nowhere else. Because they will.  If you want a brand new gallery, an fresh take on annual family photos, a completely new album to make. There is no other location I shoot at that produces a gallery that looks like Scarlet Springs. The hills, the light, the animals, it's a combination that doesn't exist anywhere else in my rotation and maybe anywhere else in Loudoun County.

One thing worth knowing before you book: the farmer asks that guests bring calm energy onto the property. These are real working animals and their comfort comes first - which honestly makes for better photographs anyway. The inside-the-fence experiences work best with children old enough to follow simple directions and take a cue when it's time to be still. And the overall experience tends to shine brightest for smaller families, five people or less, give or take. Larger groups aren't impossible but the magic of this place lives in the quiet moments, and quiet is easier to find with fewer people in it.

It is a drive from most of Loudoun County. Waterford is western and rural and worth knowing that going in. I'll always tell you honestly whether a location makes sense for your family... and for most families who ask about Scarlet Springs, my answer is yes.

If you've been thinking about a session here, I offer full sessions, half sessions, and seasonal minis at Scarlet Springs depending on the time of year. Reach out and we'll figure out which one fits.
